Discover South Africa through a board game

Did you know that South Africa has eleven official languages and three capitals? And that it is the only country in the world where two Nobel Prize winners lived on the same street?

If you are interested in the history and culture of the African continent’s southernmost country, join our interactive board game on the Researchers’ Night. During the game, we are going to discover South Africa’s history in the 20th and 21st centuries and find out about the everyday workings of the apartheid system, which was based on racial segregation. The players will also get the chance to discover some of the gems of South African music, literature and cuisine.

Hosts:
Lili Zách: As a Senior Lecturer at the Department of English at ELTE, I teach and research a wide range of issues related (but not limited) to Irish, British, American, European, and Hungarian humour and food/drink history and culture. Instead of following a data-centric approach I believe in the significance of historical curiosity in order to gain an insight into the interconnected nature of the human past.

Kata Gyuris: As a lecturer at the Department of English at ELTE, I teach literature broadly defined as postcolonial with a special focus on contemporary African fiction from Southern Africa. I believe that a country’s culture, past and present, can be best grasped and understood through its cultural products, such as literature, film and other arts.
